READING THE RECORD

A few useful distinctions.

WHOIS, powered by RDAP

RDAP is the structured, HTTPS-based successor to WHOIS. This tool uses the registry service listed by IANA. Coverage depends on the domain suffix; a suffix without a published endpoint is shown as unsupported.

Expiry is a registry date

The expiry shown is the registry’s reported date. It can differ from your registrar’s billing or renewal deadline, especially during renewal grace periods. Check your registrar account before making renewal decisions.

Privacy leaves some fields blank

Registrant contact details may be withheld or redacted. Missing data is displayed as “Not provided,” never guessed. This page summarizes registration metadata; the raw response preserves what the registry actually returned.

Registration and DNS are different

A registrar manages domain registration; DNS can be hosted elsewhere. Registry nameservers describe the registration record, while the DNS tool queries a public resolver. A missing RDAP record does not prove a domain is available to buy.
